Silk Flamestitch Panel
Probably woven in Italy or possibly Hungary, this delightful embroidery with rows of wavy leaves and repeating flowers comes from a tradition dating to the 18th century or earlier known as 'Bargello' tapestry work. In this piece the colours have adapted from earlier work to suit decorative taste at the time. The soft oatmeal background is ideal for setting off the flowers which appear to be floating in a three dimensional manner. There are some areas of loss to the embroidery on the borders, but this piece is in good usable condition and would make a lovely hanging or cover either in a period or contemporary setting.
