Fine Ukrainian Kilim
There is still confusion about the origins of many antique kilims from this region. The generic term 'Bessarabian' is often used. But in this case we can be a little more precise. It was recently bought directly from Ukraine, and my feeling is that it was woven in the Kiev region around 1900. It is an absolutely charming piece. The brown background is decorated with an elegant stylised floral design which is repeated through the borders. Note the meandering vine in the borders. The secondary colours include pale blues, greens reds, and a really lovely pale amber. The composition feels both rustic and refined at the same time which is one of the magical characteristics of this intriguing group of kilims. Beautifully made with soft wool on hemp warps, the fabric feels robust. It has the typical tapestry weave associated with this group which means there are no slits in the fabric. Note also the lovely use of 'eccentric' or curved wefts in the floral ornaments which creates a sense of texture and three dimensionality. Clearly cherished through the generations it has survived very well. Professionally cleaned and with only very minor restoration. This is a decorative kilim that could adorn any number of interior spaces.
