Qashquli Rug with Millefleurs Design

The Qashquli are a large sub-tribe of the Qashqai tribe. They were known for their distinctive rugs and in particular for their so-called Millefleurs design rugs. The term refers to a design composed of multiple small flowers, usually in a prayer rug format, which emerged from earlier Persian Court and Mughal designs. It is interesting that the Qashquli developed a specialisation in this design. In this handsome rug, we see the typical format with myriad small flowers on a red field flanked by two cypress trees. It is quite spectacular with many additional details making it a fascinating example, including the central vase, interesting cartouches in the niches, and very pretty borders. Its the kind of rug which constantly draws your attention. Woven with good wool and a fine weave, this rug has has survived in very good condition. Professionally cleaned.
